Meet the Woman Who Turned Experience Into Impact: Brenda D. Spencer, Founder of the Caring for the Caregivers Movement
From a 40-year career in media and marketing to a deeply personal caregiving journey, this entrepreneur, author, and community advocate is building a vision that reaches beyond Ohio.
Some people build businesses. Others build movements. Brenda D. Spencer has spent more than four decades building connections through media, marketing, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. Today, she is bringing that experience to a mission close to her heart: making sure caregivers receive the recognition, resources, encouragement, and support they deserve.

As the Founder, CEO, and President of Spencer 4 Higher Media LLC, a published author, sales trainer, and creator of the Annual Caring for the Caregiver Expo, Spencer represents the kind of leadership that Urban Trendsetters celebrates—people who use their experience, expertise, and personal stories to create opportunities and make a difference.
But the story behind Caring for the Caregiver did not begin in a boardroom. It began with family, loss, love, and the responsibility of caring for someone who had spent a lifetime caring for others.
A Daughter’s Love Became a Community Mission
Billy and Virginia Sanders
When Spencer’s mother passed away in 2004, her father lost the woman he had loved for more than 50 years. The grief was overwhelming. He was hurting, struggling with his health, and trying to navigate life without his lifelong partner.
Spencer and her sister stepped in to care for him. What followed was a journey that challenged them emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
“The first three years of caring for him were the toughest,” Spencer recalls. “He had always been a strong man who took good care of his family, but now he was the one who needed care.”
Her father had difficulty imagining life without his wife, but his daughters refused to give up on him. Through the difficult days and uncertain moments, they worked to ensure he was safe, cared for, and treated with dignity and respect.
With God’s grace and the support of family and friends, her father lived another 13 years before passing away in 2017.
The experience gave Spencer a personal understanding of caregiving that no professional title could teach. She experienced the worry, commitment, sacrifice, and love involved in caring for a family member—and the importance of having people around you who are willing to help.
As a daughter, mother, and grandmother, Spencer understands that caregiving touches the entire family. Caregivers need support, too.
In 2019, she says God gave her the vision for the Annual Caring for the Caregiver Expo.
Caring for the Caregiver: A Vision Inspired by Faith and Family
The Annual Caring for the Caregiver Expo was created to offer caregivers valuable information, resources, guidance, encouragement, love, and even a little pampering as they navigate life’s caregiving responsibilities.
What began as a vision inspired by Spencer’s own family experience has grown into an initiative serving Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo, Ohio.
The expo brings attention to the people who often work behind the scenes to help loved ones manage life’s most difficult seasons. It also creates opportunities for organizations, service providers, and community partners to connect with caregivers and share helpful information and resources.
For Spencer, this mission is personal. She knows that caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be isolating and exhausting. Families need to know where to turn, what resources are available, and that they do not have to navigate every challenge alone.
Her message is simple: Those who care for others deserve care, too.

From Ohio to the Nation: Growing the Vision
Spencer’s vision reaches beyond the three Ohio markets. She plans to explore expansion into Dayton and Cincinnati in 2027–2028, with the long-term goal of bringing Caring for the Caregiver to additional communities across the country.
Potential markets include Detroit, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Philadelphia, Tampa, and other cities where community organizations may be interested in bringing the initiative to local caregivers.
This next chapter is about more than adding cities to an event calendar. It is about building relationships with organizations and community leaders who share the commitment to supporting caregivers and helping them access information, resources, and encouragement.
Spencer is also working to broaden awareness of the caregiver experience through media interviews, speaking opportunities, and partnerships. Her goal is to help make caregiving a more visible community conversation—and to encourage communities to recognize the people who routinely put the needs of others first.

Meet the Author: Sell It Like It Is
Spencer’s knowledge of sales and business development also led her to become a published author.

Her book, Sell It Like It Is: A Training Guide for Rookie and Veteran Salespeople, Entrepreneurs, and Small Business Owners, was written for people who want to improve their sales skills, build confidence, and communicate the value of what they offer.
The guide presents practical, accessible techniques and actionable strategies for both new and experienced sales professionals. It also speaks to entrepreneurs and small-business owners who must learn to sell not only their products and services, but themselves and their vision.
For Spencer, selling is an essential business skill. Whether an entrepreneur is introducing a new product, building a client base, promoting a service, or seeking support for an important initiative, the ability to communicate value can make a difference.
Her experience as a sales professional and business leader gives her a practical perspective on the challenges entrepreneurs face—and the skills they need to move forward.

More Than a Career—A Commitment to People
Brenda D. Spencer’s story brings together several powerful themes: a daughter’s love for her father, a businesswoman’s decades of experience, an author’s desire to share knowledge, and a woman’s determination to build something that can serve communities beyond her own.
Her work in sales and marketing helps businesses communicate their value. Her work through Caring for the Caregiver brings attention to the people who dedicate themselves to caring for others.
Both reflect her belief in the power of connection, education, and community.
As she continues to expand the Caring for the Caregiver vision, Spencer is inviting caregivers, organizations, sponsors, service providers, volunteers, and potential community partners to join her in building a broader culture of support.
For Urban Trendsetters, Brenda D. Spencer is a reminder that behind every meaningful initiative is a story—and sometimes the experiences that challenge us most become the foundation for work that can help others.
