Dawn Staley Makes History as Highest-Paid Black Female Basketball Coach

Dawn Staley, a trailblazer in women’s college basketball, has signed a monumental 7-year, $22.4 million contract, making her the highest-paid Black head coach in women’s college basketball. As head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2008, Staley has transformed the program into a powerhouse, leading them to multiple Final Four appearances and securing a national championship in 2017.

This groundbreaking deal includes a base salary of $1 million annually, with outside compensation starting at $1.9 million in the first year, increasing by $100,000 yearly. Staley joins the ranks of the highest-paid women’s basketball coaches, alongside Geno Auriemma of UConn.

Staley views this achievement as more than personal success—it’s a benchmark for greater investment in women’s basketball programs nationwide. “This contract represents the University’s commitment… and serves as an example for other universities,” she shared.

Beyond her collegiate career, Staley also led the U.S. Women’s National Team to Olympic gold in 2021, further solidifying her legacy. South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner praised her exceptional leadership, stating, “She has built our women’s basketball program from the ground up.”

Staley’s historic contract not only honors her accomplishments but also paves the way for equitable investment in women’s sports. It’s a significant step forward for both women’s basketball and representation in sports leadership.
