Black Excellence Takes Flight: Phillip A. Washington Leads the Nation’s 2nd Largest Airport

Meet Phillip A. Washington — the powerhouse CEO of Denver International Airport (DEN), now recognized as the second largest airport in the world by land size and the third busiest by passenger volume. As a trailblazing leader in transportation and infrastructure, Washington is not just managing an airport — he’s redefining its future.

Appointed in 2021 and reaffirmed in 2023, Washington oversees an astonishing 33,531 acres of airport operations and a bold vision for growth. With his Vision 100 initiative, he’s preparing Denver International to serve 100 million passengers annually by 2030 — a nearly 30% increase from current capacity.

Under his leadership, DEN is undergoing a $10 billion Capital Improvement Program that includes terminal expansions, a new consolidated rental car facility, and a strategic push for environmental innovation. From plugging oil wells to installing solar fields, Washington is ensuring that the airport’s future is as sustainable as it is world-class.

A Legacy of Leadership

Before arriving in Denver, Washington led two of the most significant transit systems in the country — Los Angeles Metro and Denver RTD. At LA Metro, he balanced an $8.5 billion budget, oversaw transformative projects, and helped pass Measure M, a game-changing tax initiative that funded 40 infrastructure projects and created thousands of jobs across Southern California.

He also chaired the Host Transportation Committee for the 2008 Democratic National Convention and was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Service, Strategy & Recognition

Washington’s journey is one of service and strength. A 24-year veteran of the U.S. Army, he holds both a B.A. in Business and a Master’s in Management, and has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal for his leadership. He was also inducted into the American Public Transportation Association Hall of Fame — a testament to his long-standing commitment to innovation and public good.

As one of the few Black executives leading a major international airport, Washington’s impact goes beyond transportation. He’s a symbol of what’s possible when vision, purpose, and excellence meet.

“Leadership is not just about managing systems. It’s about transforming them to serve people better, safer, and more equitably,” Washington shared in a recent interview.
