Morehouse College Welcomes Dr. Derrick Brooms as Executive Director of the Black Men’s Research Institute

Sharon S Gordon July 3, 2023

Morehouse College, the renowned institution dedicated to the preparation of Black men for leadership roles, has appointed Dr. Derrick Brooms as the new executive director of its Black Men’s Research Institute (BMRI). Dr. Brooms, an esteemed scholar, activist, and educator, brings a wealth of experience in higher education, particularly in researching the educational journeys of Black men and boys. His appointment marks a significant step in Morehouse’s commitment to advancing educational equity, inclusion, and racial justice.

Bringing Expertise and Experience: Dr. Brooms joins Morehouse College from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where he serves as a professor of Africana studies and sociology and the associate department head of Africana studies. Throughout his career, he has focused on understanding the experiences and representations of Black men and boys in education, campus engagement, identity development, and the media. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Brooms is well-equipped to lead the BMRI in generating new scholarship and contributing to important conversations and policy decisions surrounding social justice.

A Shared Vision: Morehouse College’s mission to prepare Black men for leadership and service aligns perfectly with Dr. Brooms’ dedication to advancing the well-being of Black men. Dr. Kendrick Brown, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Morehouse College, expressed confidence that Dr. Brooms’ leadership will bolster efforts to address the unique challenges faced by Black men and foster a more inclusive and equitable society.

The Black Men’s Research Institute: Supported by a generous four-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the BMRI represents a groundbreaking initiative at Morehouse College. It aims to conduct research, provide education, and engage Black men and their allies on various aspects affecting their economic, social, cultural, and personal outcomes. By equipping communities with knowledge and tools to navigate societal structures that often marginalize Black men, the BMRI strives to illuminate their contributions and humanity.

With the appointment of Dr. Derrick Brooms as the executive director of the Black Men’s Research Institute, Morehouse College solidifies its commitment to advancing the understanding and well-being of Black men. The BMRI, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will be a vital hub for research, education, and engagement in addressing the challenges faced by Black men.
