According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, over 900,000 Americans undergo total hip or total knee replacement every year. Additionally, 53,000 Americans undergo total shoulder replacement each year. Joint replacement surgery can be beneficial to decrease pain, increase range of motion and increase function in older adults, but the surgery itself is only half of the story. Following surgery, patients receive many different types of medical interventions, including physician consultations and nursing services. They also receive rehabilitative services.
